*Blitz + Giveaway & Excerpt* Misplaced by Lee Murray

Accepted Readers,

Today I have a blitz + giveaway + excerpt for you! Misplaced by Lee Murray falls into the new adult/mystery genres and sounds like edge- of -your- seat read. I am a huge fan of missing person stories and the mysteries that surround them.

In Misplaced a teenager's mom goes missing and when the leads in the case go cold; his life begins to fall apart. I wouldn't want to ever be in this situation and I just know this will be a heart-breaking story, BUT I still want to read it. Between the blurb and excerpt, I became hooked. I hope you feel the same way after reading the excerpt and blurb! If you do, make sure to enter the giveaway below to win your own copy of Misplaced!

*Note*
I am a bit late on posting this blitz, it didn't post when I had  scheduled it to. I was out of town and unfortunately had very bad internet reception where I was. I just got home and wasn't able to post this until now. My apologizes.

Excerpt One:

The make-up girl has a silver nose ring and hair streaked psychedelic orange.

‘Almost done,’ the girl says, puffing his face with powder. She has bony knuckles like cauliflower stalks. Holding his breath, Adam wills himself not to fidget as she deals to the fresh eruption of zits on his forehead. Right now, a few spots are the least of his worries.

‘There, that’s put some colour in your cheeks.’

Adam opens his eyes, stares at the mirror, and doesn’t say anything. Even with the powder, he’s as pale as Colgate. There’s fuzz on his chin and dark bags under his eyes. He looks like a druggie, a metal-head on a bender.

The Powder Puff girl selects a lipstick from a tray which, held vertically, could be a Connect Four player board.

Resolution Red.

With a practised twist, she pushes up the tube.

‘Pucker up, now,’ she coaxes. ‘Give me your sexiest pout, the one the girls love.’ But Adam clamps his mouth shut, pursing his lips in a thin line, and shakes his head. No lipstick. This isn’t an audition for American Idol.

‘But...’ The Powder Puff girl puts on a pout of her own.

‘No!’ he says, with more vehemence than is warranted.

The girl shrugs, rolls her eyes. ‘Whatever.’ She packs up her Connect Four box and leaves him there.

‘One minute, people!’ the floor manager screams. Through the scramble of movement, Adam is aware of Dad, shuffling about on the spot off to the side of the make-shift set, a man out of his comfort zone. Six days a week, Dad’s natural habitat is Creighton Cars, the yard that he runs. On Sundays he mows the lawns, then slumps in front of the telly, cold beer in hand, watching whatever sport happens to be on.

Adam notices that Dad’s tugging his earlobe again. Dad always does that when he’s out of sorts. It’s a good thing the clients haven’t cottoned on or he’d never sell any cars. Lately, he’s pulled that lobe so often it’s a wonder he isn’t mistaken for a tribesman from Borneo.

Not that Adam isn’t uncomfortable. He wishes it hadn’t come to this. The thing is, the news people insisted a public appeal could make a difference. They said it’d made a difference in other cases. But Dad couldn’t face it, so Adam had agreed to do it instead. At this point Adam would agree to car surf down Auckland’s Queen Street in the wrong direction at rush hour, if there was a chance it would make a difference.

Anyway, it’s better Adam does it because, being younger than Dad, he’ll make the biggest impact, apparently. Adam knows this because he heard the camera crew chatting. They’d started off saying how Adam and Dad’s story was made for television, the kind of story that won awards. Then one of them said it was a bummer that Adam was seventeen. That’s when the guy holding the boom said, in these kind of cases, nothing tops a 7-year-old girl, especially a little blondie with dimples.

‘Trust our freaking luck!’ They’d laughed then, quietly amongst themselves, but one of them caught Adam looking and quickly shushed the others.

‘Hey, show a bit of compassion, will ya?’

Maybe this is how his life will be from now on. People shushing each other or looking away. Feeling sorry for him.

‘Adam? We’re ready for you.’ The floor manager speaks quietly. Adam’s grateful. Right now he feels like the entire cast of Lost, like something awful is about to happen. Maybe it already has, maybe he’s living in a parallel universe and none of this is real, but whatever it is, Adam doesn’t get any of it. He gets to his feet and allows the floor manager to direct him to the lectern. Placing both hands on either side of the lectern, Adam steadies himself.

This has to work. Please, let this work. Please.

But Adam knows that even if it does, nothing will be quite the same.

‘In 5... 4... 3...’ The floor manager holds up two fingers, then one...

The microphone makes a soft buzz as it’s switched on. Adam pauses, marvelling at how they actually do that, the holding up the finger thing.

Oh shit.

He’s on national television. His face spreads with warmth: the nasty-but-nice feeling you get when you pee in the sea. Great. His face will be red and blotchy now. He inhales deeply.

Swallows.

Stares directly at the camera lens.

What if this is the last time he ever speaks to her?

‘Mum... Mum, if you’re out there, if you can hear this, please, please call and let us know you’re all right. Whatever’s wrong, Dad and me, we’re worried. Please, Mum, just come home...’

*Book Blitz + 2 Giveaways* Hidden by Megg Jensen

Accepted Readers,

Today I have a book blitz + 2 giveaways for you! I was delighted when I found out that the author Megg Jensen is from Chicago, right near my hometown! Chicago LOVE at its finest, baby! *I couldn't resist, hehe*

Hidden is the first book from the Dragonlands series and it sounds absolutely fascinating! It falls into the fantasy genre but it also appears to be a dystopian. Two of my favorite genres combined! Woot! I'm so in! I'm getting it day one!

If you don't believe me on how epic this book sounds, read the excerpt I have for you. I bet it will blow your mind!
Excerpt:

Bastian watched Tressa run away. Same as always. Unless their best friend Connor was there, Tressa wouldn’t stand in Bastian’s presence any longer than necessary. Not even today, when she needed him.

He turned to the direction of his cottage, not eager to go home. He’d been at the forge for a couple hours, pounding out metal in intense late summer heat. He was ready for a break, but hearing of Sophia’s death was not what he anticipated for the day.

Bastian’s intention had been to grab a snack and a long drink of water, but going back to his cottage meant facing his wife. They had come together the same way every other couple in the village had.

Once the council checked the lineage charts, they placed ribbons with the eligible men’s names written on them. The woman would choose a ribbon and that man would be her mate for three months. If the woman conceived, they were bonded. If not, the process began again.

Bastian had his chance with Tressa. He’d loved her too and when it was confirmed she hadn’t conceived, both of their worlds fell apart. They were forced to move on with others. His coupling with Vinya was successful the first month – and he’d hated himself every moment of it. It felt like a betrayal.

He walked through the town, invisible to everyone despite his height and red hair. Silence was his way and people had learned to ignore him. They spoke in whispers, everyone concerned with what was to come next. Bastian couldn’t be bothered with it. As long as the fog surrounded Hutton’s Bridge, nothing mattered. He was trapped.

The door swung open before he could place hand on the handle.

“Bastian. You’re late. I’ve had your snack waiting for some time. Why can’t you ever do anything right?” Vinya sighed and stepped out of the way. Her eyes, so accusing, raked down his chest. “And you’re filthy. Can’t you ever remember to wash before coming home? I work so hard to maintain this dump you call a cottage, just so my daughter and I have a decent place to live. Maybe you could be respectful of us for once?”

Bastian nodded. He’d learned long ago that words wouldn’t soothe her feral soul. Vinya was determined to strip away any semblance of manhood he had. At first he found her attitude amusing. Now he wished her lips would fall off.

Ignoring her huffing, he sat down at the table next to his daughter, Farah. “How are you, baby girl?” He ruffled her curls.

Vinya slapped him on the shoulder. “Don’t touch her with your filthy hands.”

“Good, Papa.” Farah ignored her mother too. At two, she’d already learned to cope with the circumstances. “Wanna nut?” She held out a walnut in her tiny hand.

Bastian’s fingertips were almost as big as her palm. He plucked the nut and tossed it in the air, catching in it in his mouth. Farah squealed and clapped.

“Again! Again!” She scrambled for another nut.

Vinya slapped Farah’s backside with the broom bristles.

“Stop it, now. Go lay down for a nap.” Farah nodded, dropped a quick kiss on Bastian’s cheek, and ran through the door to her little room.

“You don’t have to be so harsh with her, Vinya.” Bastian said between mouthfuls of bread. “She’s still a baby.”

“Speaking of babies…” Vinya sat down at the table next to him. “It’s about time we try to conceive a second. Our village needs children to survive.” She reached out, running her fingertips along his arm. “It’s been so long since –”

Bastian looked up at her. Vinya had loosened her top. She dipped her chin and fluttered her eyelashes at him. Long ago, that move worked. He was younger. More eager. Trying to drown out his frustration about losing Tressa.

Now he didn’t want anything to do with Vinya.

“Sophia died.”

Vinya’s hand snapped back as if he’d burned her. “Finally. That woman was too old. Taking up resources the rest of us need.”

Bastian held back the urge to slap her. He’d never raised a hand to anyone, much less Vinya, but there were moments he fanaticized about it. “She was loved deeply by many in this village.”

Vinya snorted.

“What?” He asked it even though he knew he shouldn’t.

“You’re only worried about your precious little Tressa. Just like always.” Vinya stood up and continued sweeping the floor. The dirt among the rushes didn’t stand a chance against her fury. “Well, after tomorrow that won’t be a problem anymore. Maybe once the fog swallows her, you’ll be back in my bed. She’ll be forgotten and we can finally have a proper marriage.”

Bastian stood up, wiped the crumbs off his hands over the plate, and placed it in the washbin. He scrubbed with the cloth, sure he would wear a hole in the metal plate. “You shouldn’t speak of death like that.”

It had been feeding on his soul every day since Tressa’s name was chosen three months ago. He’d sought her out repeatedly, but never had the strength to say what he wanted. That he missed her. He loved her. He wanted her to stay in the village and live a long life even if he could never touch her again.

“I can’t wait for Tressa to die.” Vinya stood defiant, her hands clutching the broom’s handle. “I’ll finally have you all to myself.”

Bastian glared at Vinya. “You will never have me. Never again. You make me sick.” He tossed the plate on the table. It slipped and fell to the floor. Neither made a move to pick it up. Bastian strode across the room and through the doorway. He slammed the door behind him, not caring who saw.

She’d gone too far.

I grew up in a world of magic. By the time I was ten I understood nature, talked to the trees, and listened to the wind. When the kingdom of men conquered my town, I was murdered by one of my own—the betrayer of my kind. But I didn't stay dead.

I woke to find myself in a strange new world called Los Angeles. The only keys to the life I remembered were my father’s ring, my unique abilities, and the onslaught of demons that seemed hell-bent on finding me. Now I must find out who I really am, protect my friends, and get back to my beloved hometown of Orenda.

A DOUBLE TEASE
I did not make the following images; both came from the author's social media sites. I must say they spark one's curiosity don't you think?

Jennifer L. Armentrout's BITTER SWEET LOVE Release Day Launch

Jennifer L. Armentrout's amazing novella in her new The Dark Elements Series, BITTER SWEET LOVE, is out and we are excited to join in the release day launch for it. BITTER SWEET LOVE is the Prequel Novella for The Dark Elements Series and is full of Wardens, fantasy, and romance.

The first novel in the series, WHITE HOT KISS, will be released February 25, 2014. Check out what we have for you today! There's also a fantastic excerpt for you to check out below!

EXCERPT:

Moving lightning fast, Dez shifted and I was suddenly underneath him. His arms were on either side of my head, caging me in. Our bodies didn’t touch, but I felt him to the tips of my toes anyway.

The teasing grin disappeared when I dragged in a deep breath and my chest brushed his. Everything changed in an instant. The playful mood faded, replaced by primal heaviness. Our gazes collided and locked. Neither of us moved. His closeness sent a series of shivers skittering across my skin and made it hard to take slow, even breaths. My body tensed when his gaze dropped to my mouth.

He tilted his head to the side. “I… I honestly have no idea what we were talking about.”

                “Good. Neither do I.”

He shifted his weight onto one arm, bring him closer. “Have you enjoyed your trip so far?”

“Yes.” I felt as if I couldn’t get enough air into my lungs.

“Good.” He lowered his head. His breath was minty as it moved across my cheek and then my lips. “I’m glad.”

I wasn’t really following the conversation and I wasn’t sure that he was fully aware of what was coming out of his mouth. I searched my hazy brain for something to say and wet my lips. I-

The sound that came out of Dez’s chest rumbled through me. A stuttered heartbeat passed and then his lips were on mine. There was nothing slow about this kiss. It scorched my skin and caused my body to stretch tight like a bowstring. The kiss deepened, spinning my senses. I shuddered when his hand curved over my shoulder and drifted down to my waist, his long fingers spreading out under the hem of my shirt, grazing the bare skin of my stomach.

I gasped, floored by the raw sensations pounding through my blood. My skin felt as if I was about to phase. Maybe I was.

“Jasmine,” he whispered, the word falling against my lips, and then his body was pressing mine into the mattress, heavy, sweet and hard.

World AIDS Day

Accepted Readers,

Today is World AIDS Day, a day to spread awareness for HIV and AIDS and its impact on the world. The stigma that comes along with just mentioning this virus is hard to bare. In most cases the people who have the virus are severely discriminated against and sometimes even feared. Many people think that HIV and AIDS is only a "queer" disease, meaning that only the gays, lesbians, bi-sexual, or transgender people get it. THIS IS NOT TRUE, ANYONE can contract this deadly disease.

Today is the day to spread awareness, to commemorate those who have died and those who have been affected by this disease, to fight for/beside them to let them know they are not alone. Take the time today to learn about HIV and AIDS because knowledge is power. It is in our ignorance where our fears and discrimination form. Let's take a stand and promote love, acceptance, understanding, hope, and prevention. Together we can make a difference.
Authors and Gay Right Advocates
Speak Out
In honor of World AIDS Day, Open Road Integrated Media, asked celebrated authors and gay rights advocates, including Martin Duberman and Christopher Bram, to discuss the impact of AIDS on their personal lives as well as their writing.

For more on these authors and to browse their AIDS in Literature collection, visit openroadmedia.com/LGBT

I will be reading and reviewing Someone Was Here sometime during the month of December. Check back soon for my review.
Amidst the political, medical, and statistical aspects of AIDS are the human beings whose lives are being taken. Gay novelist Whitmore, himself diagnosed with AIDS, returns to his journalistic roots to document the tragedy on an intimate level. He presents dramatized profiles based on interviews: Jim Sharp, his lover Dennis, and his buddy Edward in Greenwich Village; Mike Rocha reunited with his mother Nellie in Greeley, Colorado; and Jimmy Sanchez, nursed by Carmen Baez at Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx. The result is "something more like snapshots taken from a speeding train" than a panoramic essay. This is an admirable, personal attempt at bringing the abstract horrors of the epidemic to an inescapable reality.
Interested in reading or reviewing Someone Was Here by author and activist George Whitmore? You can request it from NetGalley.

Become Educated
According to statistics 1 out of 5 people with HIV and AIDS are NOT aware that they have it, prevention is key to stopping this deadly virus. Get tested.

*REVIEW* The Soul's Mark: CHANGED (#4) by Ashley Stoyanoff

Accepted Readers,

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post that included my top 5 most anticipated book releases... I am so excited to say that I got my hands on my number one pick early!  (The Soul's Mark: CHANGED by Ashley Stoyanoff) When I received the email with the ARC, my emotions ran wild.

A demonstration of my reaction:
Yep. That just about sums up how I felt...
add in a funky dance + some jumping around.

I have read every book that Ashley had released up-to-date and have been a huge fan of her writing since the very moment I picked up The Soul's Mark: FOUND. (Way back in 2012) The Soul's Mark series holds a special place in my heart and this review may be a bit bittersweet because as of right now, The Soul's Mark: CHANGED is meant to be the final book. *epic sad face*
ABOUT THE BOOK
Title: The Soul's Mark: CHANGED
Author: Ashley Stoyanoff
Series: The Soul's Mark series (#4)
Age Group/Genre: Young Adult/ Paranormal Romance
Release Date: November 23, 2013
Publisher: Ashley Stoyanoff Books

My Rating: 5/5

Ever since college student Amelia Caldwell moved to Willowberg, her life has been in turmoil. But with the evil vampire hunters no longer terrorizing the town, Willowberg is once again peaceful.

With a little help from Mother Nature and a dream for a better future, Mitchell has found himself in a predicament—after eight hundred years of being immortal, he is now a human while his soulmate is a vampire.

Now all Amelia and Mitchell have to do is hide from the world until his body can handle the change. But when Mitchell gets a cold, all hell breaks loose.

With an unexpected resistance rising, and an unexplained deadline from the spirits, Amelia realizes that this is a fight she cannot win alone. One thing is clear, though: to save Mitchell, he needs to change—again. But if he does, what chance does he have of surviving it?

My Review

*NOTE*
Normally I do not summarize the novels I read, but I wanted to try something different. Let me know if you guys like the idea of this or not.

My Break-Down:
In this latest installment (and possibly the last) of The Soul's Mark series, Amelia is forced to face many crucial events. As if being a newbie vampire isn't enough, she also has the challenge of caring for an ill and now fully human Mitchell. A dangerous resistance is arising and Amelia needs Mitchell to control the problem, but in order to help he needs to be a vampire again. Can he survive the change and is it a risk Amelia is willing to take?

As the deadline to solve the dilemma given to them by the spirits quickly approaches, Amelia and Mitchell struggle to find the right solution; the choices they make can alter every aspect of their life, but not necessarily for the better.

Amelia must also decide on which path in life is willing to take; to remain a vampire and remain in her current life with her friends and Mitchell or take the choice the spirits are offering her that will lead to the unknown.

Writing Style:
In comparison to the other books in this series, The Soul's Mark: CHANGED is definitely the best. With every new novel, Ashley Stoyanoff's writing just keeps getting better! When I read her writing, it feels like I'm watching a television show because everything seems so realistic. This book covers many critical events in the plot, all of the key events that make up The Soul's Mark series. The plot could have easily became a jumbled mess, purely do to all the things going on. I was amazed at how she brought everything together and how smoothly everything panned out to be. She did a fantastic job in particular with the ending because it leaves you feeling satisfied. A wonderful conclusion for a brilliantly addictive series!

 My Opinion:
Can somebody say, OMG WOW like seriously! This book blew me away. I read the entire thing in one sitting, only stopping to take mini breaks to eat and use the bathroom. I couldn't put it down or read it fast enough. I was so terribly afraid to read this because I knew this could possibly be the very last book in The Soul's Mark series. It took me many months to prep myself to deal with the idea of not being able to read more from this series. All good things must come to an end I guess, right?

What I loved most about The Soul's Mark: CHANGED was how the relationship between Mitchell and Amelia developed. I have to be honest, I used to hate Mitchell like hardcore. I felt that Amelia could have done so much better but now I take that back. I'm not sure if it was due to the fact of the roles between them switching or what, but I can see now that they are without a doubt, meant for each other. What one lacks the other has, they truly complete each other. The best part? They actually realized that in this book. FINALLY! All fighting ceased and they became at one with each other, words cannot explain the happiness I felt. I loved to see them happy!

I will miss this series. I wish it could continue on forever. I'm really hoping for more novels/novellas. The book has a satisfying definite ending BUT it did leave open a slight possibility for another book. Or maybe it's just me trying to keep the series alive in my mind. Whatever the case, The Soul's Mark series will always be one of my favorites!
