My Review
Writing Style:
I would describe Dark Promise as a quick, cutesy, light
read. The story was easy to follow, sometimes a bit too simple. To be honest it
read like a short story, only providing the most important details while
leaving you craving for more. The world building in this novel was marvelous. I
could easily envision the vast beauty of the fae world, so mystical and
breathtaking. I adored the character dialogues, especially the humor of Rylie.
The plot of the story started off a bit slow but gained momentum towards the
middle. I will say it kept my interest up until the very last page. I plan on
checking out more books written by Julia Crane and Talia Jager, including their
individual novels. I am curious to see how their writing differs because they
make quite an impressive team.
My Opinion:
The story is told through the voice of a 16-year-old named
Rylie. She is living the normal teenager life: perfect boyfriend, an awesome best
friend, good grades, and great parents. Well normal until the day
she turned 16. That faithful day her life is turned upside down. She wakes up
with a set of beautiful wings and pointed ears. To make matters worse, a deal
that was made when she was born may force her to give up everything she has ever
loved. (And I thought my life was crappy sometimes)
Dark Promise is
geared towards a younger crowd. (15 and younger) I have no problem with
that because I love YA fiction but if you’re looking for something a bit more “adult”
this book is NOT for you. I wish I could have discovered this book in my teen
years because I would have been floored by it. I am in no way saying I did not
enjoy it, because I did. However, I feel I would have had a greater connection
to the story if I was still a young teenager.
At first I was annoyed with Rylie. I had to refrain from screaming
at her to grow the hell up. As the story progressed I formed a bond with her. Her
reactions and emotions were completely understandable and believable… I am
pretty positive I would have responded the same way she did. Or at least I hope I would. She turned out to be an amazing character! I am excited to see what other surprises she will face in her life.
I wish I could share more details but I am afraid that I may
spoil the story. I will be reading the next book in this series because I
already miss the dazzling world it took me to. I encourage you to check out this wonderful
novel because it will leave you feeling truly magical.
