Excerpt: E-Day
A roaring sound had taken up residence in my head
as I took in the situation. Tied to a chair, shirtless and in nothing but camo
pants and boots was my husband. I never thought I’d see him again, and I was
glad for it. Yet there he was, with his deceptively innocent, almost baby face
staring back at me with wide eyes. He was gagged and his nostrils were flaring
wildly as he studied my body language. The last time I’d seen him things hadn’t
gone well.
I curled my finger on the trigger of my rifle and
stared down the barrel. I could shoot him right now, make up some excuse and no
one would ever know the difference. But could I really shoot him? Hell yes, I can. I sneered at him and
took aim. He shook his head fervently, as if he could persuade me to stop. He’d
destroyed my life long before M-Day and now I was going to take my only
penance.
“Hey, stop! What are you doing?” Max yelled from
behind me. “He’s not infected!”
Pull the
trigger. Just pull the trigger.
But now that Max and Zee were gawking at me, I just couldn’t. What would I tell
them if they saw me kill someone in cold blood? I had a feeling they wouldn’t
understand even if they did know the truth. “My mistake. His eyes looked blue
to me.”
