I have been dying to share this cover and finally the time is here. Deadly Mates is one of my most anticipated releases for this year. I am a huge fan of the author Ashley Stoyanoff and I am proud to say I have read and reviewed all of her released books up-to-date. I am even more delighted to say that I've LOVED them all. (All received 5 stars from me) If you haven't read anything from this wonderful indie author, you are totally missing out!

My Opinion

*Insert fan girl scream here*

I think that sums up my excitement pretty well.  This cover is gorgeous, absolutely breathtaking. 

 -In regards to the cover models-

Aidan is far more attractive than I pictured him... and I feel the urge to touch him. However, I just know Jade won't stand for that, unfortunately. His eyes are hypnotic, his hair is dashing, and that smirk makes me feel weak. *dreamy sigh* I have a weakness for bad boys and he fits the bill. I dig his tattoo and facial stubble as well... hell everything about him equals sheer perfection. Jade is gorgeous as always, it seems the wolf life is suiting her quite nicely. She looks far more mature now then she did on the cover of Deadly Crush. Her facial expression makes her look a bit snotty though and I'm not sure I like that. In a way I hope she grows out of that phrase. 

-In regards to the color scheme and design-

I adore the autumn color scheme used on this cover, it's quite soothing. The font color makes the writing stand out without drawing away too much attention from the overall cover. The backdrop featuring the forest and wolves really ties in well with the synopsis. Ashley has done it again, another 5-Star cover!

Dreadful Snowy Weather

The Christmas season is over, so why are we still having dreadful snowy weather? It's the middle of March and here in Indiana we are getting more snow then we did in December. I'm beginning to think we should change the order of months. February could be the new December and March the new January. It could totally be believable.

Spring is supposed to be 8 days away and yet we woke up to at least 5 inches of snow, possibly more due to drifting. The wind is bitterly cold making the nearly 30 degree weather feels closer to negative digits. My desire for warmer weather is becoming quite insatiable.
 
The roads are treacherous not only because of the snow and ice but beware of the hidden potholes... they are the deadliest. I had to be at work by 6 a.m., so I had to deal with unplowed streets and massive snowflakes still falling. The worst combination to pair with the freaking potholes, I'm shocked I managed to avoid blowing out a tire or two. I did invent a slew of new phrases to use. (Damn you son of a biscuit, what the hell ass monkey...you can suck it. Is one of my new favorites)

I'm annoyed because the snow was almost all melted yesterday and now it's back with a vengeance. I can almost bet that by the time I leave work the snow will be melting again. (It was.) It's like Mother Nature is having a serious case of PMS and the woman needs to chill out... like now. Snow, rain, and ever changing temperatures just aren't cutting it anymore. It's coming to the point that I'm confused on what to wear; I may need a heavy winter jacket with warm clothing by day and no jacket with shorts at night.

Things could be worst for me though, at least my city isn't experiencing power outages. I've heard many neighboring cities are... My heart goes out to them. I do slightly wish the electricity would go out at my work so I could go home and take a nap. I can dream can't I?

Please my friends, if you live in an area that is being hit by the snow... be safe. Drive slowly; take your frustration out by cursing at the potholes or snow... Trust me it works like a charm. Just remember this hopefully will be the last storm before Spring comes.

Book Hangovers

Have you ever read a book that has left you feeling utterly and completely drained? Sometimes I come across books that leave anlasting effect on me. Some leave me feeling either emotionally or physically flushed. In rare cases, a book can cause both. I call them book hangovers. They consist of emotional breakdown (i.e.: euphoria, depression, etc.), weakness, and overall tiredness. They are an interesting phenomenal sensation. All I know is that a book has to be REALLY something special to be able to induce such feelings. 

I just literally finished a book that impacted me in both ways. I truly wasn't expecting this book to floor me like it did, I am quite shocked in fact. It was a genre that I normally lack interest in but this book changed my perception all together.  I'm not going to reveal the book as of yet... you just have to wait for the review that I will be posting this Friday but trust me you will want to come back and discover what book it is. I will say that it is a dystopian novel that deals with a paranormal creature with a splash of romance. 

I'm still feeling a bit out of it... I need to go recover from this amazing book. I think I may need a nap and a nice warm shower. *sighs*

Glitches All Around

I am pretty positive that all electronics, small devices, mobile phones, and any other type of machine hate me today. It seems like the moment I touch anything that requires electricity, it malfunctions or gets glitches. When I attempt to plug anything in I see sparks. I seem charged with static electricity and for the love of me I don't understand why. I'm a bit afraid to be sitting in front of my laptop typing this...I'm waiting for something to smoke or the screen to go black. I'm thinking about covering myself in cushions to protect all my important devices. If nothing else, I'll be really cozy. lol.

The cash register went down work. I unplugged the system to reset it and BAM... it crashes. Every time I touched unplugged and plugged in the cord, the socket sparked. I had to manually write down all transactions until the stupid thing came back up. It took nearly two hours to function properly. The funny part, it started to work out of the blue. I was keeping myself busy cleaning up and turn around and it was working. We still don't know what caused it to go down or why it started to magically work again, but eh we just kinda of went with the flow.

Even blogger is glitching on me today. For some reason I am unable to schedule my posts to go live at a later time or date. I know I'm doing everything correctly, but the time and day comes and it doesn't post. Tell me fellow blogger.com users... do you have the same problem? It happened again to me today and now because it didn't post when I needed it to, I may not be able to tour with the company I was working with. (They have strict posting rules; they want things up by a certain time) It would be one thing if this was the first time this happened but it's not. I've also been having formatting issues but that is a whole other subject. Needless to say I'm completely upset. If problems keep happening like this, I will have to switch website servers. WordPress never looked as good as it does this very moment. *sighs*

How is your day going today? Hopefully a bit better than mine. I would love to hear about some of  your "glitchy" days. It would make me feel better to know that I'm not the only one who deals with days like this. lol. Leave a comment below... make my day =-P

Stanley

April 9, 1904

          “No! Please don’t shoot!” Her voice wavered slightly though she tried her hardest to remain firm and unfazed. Had it not been for the tremor in her tone and the unmistakable trembling of her shoulders, the intruder might have bought her act of valor.

          The terrified cries of my wife echoed against the bare wooden walls causing me to run in a panic. I flew down a flight of stairs towards the parlor area and noticed the dim flicker of a single candle illuminating the room. It added an eerie ambiance to what was to be the most horrifying moment of my life.

          “Gandy! What do you think you’re doing?! Get your hands off my wife!” I shouted with pure ferocity. I wouldn’t be surprised if the blood vessels in my eyes had burst open given the tint of red that shadowed my vision.

          “Well, well, lookit ‘ere who it is,” Gandy slurred drunkenly as he gripped my wife’s strawberry blond hair between his fingers. “It’s Stanley Heckley! Or might I say, the Great Stanley Heckley.” He cackled and peered down at my wife.

          My eyes fell instantly onto Christiana’s tear stained face. I made an attempt to rush forward, however, she shook her head slightly and mouthed, “Go! Save Katie.”

          My stomach wrenched as I pictured our three-month-old daughter hidden under the floorboards in the main room upstairs. She was safe - for now.

          I cleared my throat and stood up straighter. Holding my hands out as a final plea, I said as calmly, but with as much authority as I could muster, “Gandy, please put down the gun. You had a little too much to drink tonight and I promise that if you walk out of here this instant, I will not tell the authorities of this little incident.”

          I braced myself for his reaction and was surprised to hear a hearty chuckle in response. Christiana winced as he continued his belly laugh and pulled tightly against her head. Her beautiful braid was now a rat’s nest and I was surprised not to find clumps of her pinkish locks strewn along the floor.

          “Do you think you have the right to tell me what to do?” Gandy laughed hysterically. With his gun toting hand he reached up and wiped tears from the corners of his eyes.

          “I beg your pardon but I don’t see the humor in this situation,” I growled.

          “You want to know what’s funny?” Gandy snapped. “The fact that Christiana here picked you over me. What does she see in you anyway? Nothing but a stack of cash that your daddy gave you.”

          I glanced around the room frantically, looking for any escape route. My eyes focused on the window and my mind methodically went over any possible option I had to get my family out of this situation. It was as if everything was running in slow motion, from the flow of my blood through my veins to the harsh beating of my pained heart.

          “Are you listening to me?!” Gandy’s hazy voice interrupted my frantic thoughts.

          I gulped. “Yes, Gandy.”

          His eyes widened as he pointed the barrel toward me. Christiana gasped and began pleading frantically, begging for him to drop the gun. Ignoring her cries, he lifted an eyebrow as he looked me dead in the eye. “It’s yes, sir,” he corrected.

          I nodded my head. “Yes, sir,” I replied through gritted teeth.

          His lips curled up into a sinister grin and he began pacing the room dragging Christiana along with him. She grabbed at his hand, trying to pry his fingers from her scalp, but was unsuccessful. The gray skirt of her dress, a birthday present from me, dragged behind her, becoming soiled with the dust from the floor.

          “Now, I don’t know why you’re stupid enough to come back to town,” he said through gritted teeth. “The folks here were finally steer clear of the Heckleys, yet here you are infesting our town again with your filthy riches. You think your family’s better than all of us here, don’t you? Just because of your blue blood ways.”

          “Gandy,” I said in an even tone. It pained me to even speak, my throat dry and parched from fear. “Please leave my property. We’ll deal with this when you’re sober in the morning.”

          “This ain’t about being sober! This is about the abomination that your family has bestowed upon the less privileged. That’s why you came back to town now, isn’t it? To take over all the businesses that your greedy father wasn’t able to get his cold, vile hands on! You should have stayed in God knows where you were!”

          “It was a mistake to come back,” I agreed as I nodded my head; and good God did I agree. “We only came back to tie up ends concerning my father’s estate. Nothing more.”

          “Ah, yes,” he grinned. “That’s right! Your old man croaked a month ago, didn’t he?”

          My blood began boiling and instinctively my fists clenched together. “Yes,” I said in a raspy tone. The pain of having lost my father still burned freshly in my heart. Hearing Gandy speak so nonchalantly about his passing made me want to gouge his eyes out. That would have to wait. For now I needed to focus on helping my sweet wife.

1. Where do you buy your books from?

I buy book from anywhere they are available .I do mean just about anywhere including:

-Various major retail stores such as  Walmart, Kmart, and Meijer

-Independent and Mayor book stores such as Barnes & Nobles, Disc Replay, and other small owned shops

-Online websites such as Amazon,  Ebay, Barnes & Nobles, BookOutlet, and The Book Depository

-Yard Sales, Library Book Sales, 2nd hand stores

2. Do you ever pre-order books and if so do you do this in store or online?

No. I have never pre-ordered any books. I seldom have the chance to read a book as soon as I buy it.

3. On average, how many books do you buy a month?

Oh my, this is a hard question for me because it various. Are we talking just physical books or adding in e-books as well? If I combine both, I would say I buy an average 15-20 a month.

4. Do you use your local library?

No, I haven't used a library in years other than to purchase books from the sales they have. The last time I used the library I think I was in 10th grade.

5. If so,  how many books can you/do you borrow at a time?

I don't but when I used to, I remember being able to borrow up to 10 and I would borrow that exact amount every time. lol.

6. What is your opinion on library books?

It's a great idea really, just not for me. I get possessive of books I enjoy and find it rather difficult to have to return them.  I also don't like the time limits; it makes me feel like I have to rush. The lack of copies libraries offer is another downfall for me, most books I want to read are already checked out and are on wait lists.

7. How do you feel about charity shop/second hand books?

I love love love them! I would say over 75% of the books on my shelves are from second hand stores. As long as they are in acceptable conditions, I have no issue with them. I usually try to find most books I want used unless it's a newer release that I need like ASAP.

Fun Fact: My local library has a book sale room that is opened every day and I'm a frequent shopper there. So much in fact, they know me by name now. lol.

8. Do you keep your read and TBR pile together/on the same book shelf or not?

My book shelves look like ground zero of a disaster site. The only books with a special shelf are my favorite  books I've read. The rest are just wherever they will fit. I own 4 book shelves that nearly touch my ceiling, all of which are filled to the brim with books. I also have a table that sits in front of my shelves that has stacks of books piled on it along with 2 plastic bins filled with more. 

Don't even get me started on all the books on my Kindle and Nook.  That is whole other type of problem. *bows head in shame*

Fun Fact: I hope to reorganize my shelves soon but seriously need to enlist in the help of a few people. It's that bad.

9. Do you plan to read all of the books that you own?

I certainly hope so but I'm not sure I will be able to. The sheer amount of physical and e-book format books I own that are unread is probably somewhere  around 1000. I would have to read 300+ books a year just to put a dent in my TBR. Unfortunately there is not enough time in a day because I work full-time. :(

10. What do you do with books you that you own that you feel you will never read/felt you did not enjoy?

Actually this is a problem I hope to work on soon. I will be doing a book-shelf sweep and clearing out books that I've lost interest for. I will then donate the books to my local library and give some to a few of my friends.  This task I'm sure will take me days to complete but will be worth it in the end.

11. Have you ever donated books?

Yes I have. I've donated them by the box actually to my local library. The one thing I refuse to do is sale books... I just don't have it in me to charge someone for the books I've brought... it seems wrong.

12. Have you ever been on a book buying ban?

I am on one now. I've been trying really hard to avoid buying so many books lately. I've only been purchasing ones that go along with sets I already own or some that have been on my wish list for a very long time. 

It's providing hard to do this when I visit the library sale room...I used to go there once or twice a week every week. Now I've cut back to twice a month. It's been so difficult for me. :(

13. Do you feel that you buy too many books?

Yes, but as I like to say, you can NEVER have too much of a good thing. I am addicted to books and I am proud. One thing is certain, if a zombie apocalypse breaks out tomorrow...I will have a whole lot of reading material to keep me company and some that could be donated to a fire. Yep... I went there.

Short Story Weekly #12: Green Angel by Alice Hoffman

I am back with another Short Story Weekly. I hope to post these more often. This week I am reviewing Green Angel by Alice Hoffman. This was the second time I've read this wonderful book, the first time being when I was still in High School. I remember loving the book then and I still do. I recently found out that a book two was released for this book called Green Witch; once I can track down a copy I will be featuring it on Short Story Weekly as well.

MY REVIEW

Writing Style: 
My favorite aspect of this book is the manner in which it is written. Many literary devices are present including elements of imagery and symbolism making this book read like a poem. 

My Opinion:
I treasured this book when I first read it and adore it even more now. I didn't realize it at the time, but this book was one of the first dystopian novels I ever read. Green Angel is a tale about a teen girl recovering from despair and finding hope when the world she knows is destroyed. At only 128 pages, this book may be short but holds an incredible story.

The way Green views the world around her shows she is mature beyond her years. She is rational but notices things that others refuse to see. I would best describe her thoughts as lyrical poetry. What I find the most interesting about Green is how she deals with her loneliness and fear. To hide how vulnerable she truly is on the inside, she does everything she can to make her appearance look rough and rugged. She refuses to show weakness even when she is breaking inside. She may have flaws but it's her imperfections that make her feel realistic. Green is a beautiful character with depth and values. She will make you feel emotions you had no idea you were capable of feeling.

To Read or Not To Read:
I say stop whatever you're doing and read this book now! If you enjoy lyrical prose, imagery and symbolism, you will LOVE this book!

*Update* Week One Of The #31dbc

Today marks day 7 of the 31 Day Blogging Challenge. I have successfully posted every day this week! This is a huge improvement for me and I am proud of myself. I wasn't sure I would be able to post every day, but I've really surprised myself with my dedication.

I am grateful for the blogger app that I downloaded on my Android phone. It has been a real-life saver on my busy days. It enables me to blog on the go. It's a bit confusing, but I've mostly figured it out. If only I knew how to change my text size/color and skip lines between paragraphs. Until I can figure that part out, I'll just be editing the post as soon as I can via computer. So you may end up seeing some posts in rough format, I apologize.

Bookish Questions: Should certain books be banned?

 Welcome to Bookish Questions, where we discuss various book related questions. I share my honest opinion on the matter and you tell me yours. No need to alter your opinion, this is all about honesty. All I ask is to be respectful towards each other. Everyone has a right to their opinions. 

The Question

Where do you stand on the issue of book banning? Do you think certain books should be banned? Why or why not?

My Opinion

A lot of buzz has been hitting the online book community lately about books being banned. I was shocked and appalled to learn that it is happening in the United States via Amazon.com. I know this happens frequently in various International countries due to their strict laws and religious rules but I had no idea it happens here too.  

I feel that no book should ever be banned because of its content. Many authors will include a warning in the description if explicit or controversial material is included in their book. If you know certain things offend you, simply don't read books related to the subject.  If an author is being forthcoming and letting you know what to expect then why be upset if you decide to read it? I just don't get it. 

Sometimes I think certain people want to be offended so they can cause a ruckus. I also think some people feel that because they find something detestable that everyone else should too and make it a point to try to turn others against whatever it is they don't agree with. As I said, everyone has a right to express their opinion but it should be done so in a respectable manner. I don't think it is right for people to want a book banned because they are offended by it. If this were the case for everything else, most things on the internet would be banned. 

To sum it up, I feel that if you know a book will offend you then just don't read it. Move on to a book you know you will enjoy. There is no need to be belligerent about it. Someone else may enjoy the book you find offending. Everyone should have their chance to decide by having the chance to actually read the book themselves. If it becomes banned... that makes it unfair for everyone who did not have a say in the matter.
